Mike Duncan Kamau, a second-year Law student at Mt Kenya University ( MKU), is happy to be alive after he was shot six times during the June 25, 2025, protests in Nairobi.

On the fateful day, 22-year-old Mike joined protests to mark the anniversary of June 25, 2024, where more than 60 lives were lost in anti-tax protests.

Speaking on Sunday at his family home in Ngurubani town, Kirinyaga County, his father Peter Muchira said his son’s shooting affected the family emotionally and the hospital bill rose to Ksh.147,000. He was discharged from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Saturday evening.

“I am happy to see Mike alive after six bullets were removed from his body,” Mr Muchira said.

Mike was among thousands of youth who protested in memory of fellow citizens who lost their lives to police brutality.

“We were cornered at around 3. Ordered to lie down, they had canes,” Mike recalls.

“One bullet caught my lungs. I actually thought it was a stone, I ran a few steps and lost breath. A friend took me to another building and they called medics. When the ambulance was taking me to Kenyatta, I heard them counting the bullets. I was shocked.”

The Law student at MKU said he can now walk after six bullets were removed from his body.

“My stomach has bandages to help protect wounds from infection, control bleeding and promote healing. As for now I cannot join protests but I advocate for better governance,” Mike told Citizen Digital.

Tebere Ward MCA Peter Karinga called for an end to the brutality targeted towards youths who are championing a better Kenya.

“Mike is known by his peers from Tebere ward and was shot six times, and by God's grace, he survived. We are happy to see him,” Karinga said.

He is among over 500 others injured during the June protests, where nearly 19 Kenyans lost their lives.
