It's a logistical nightmare: CJ Koome speaks on slow pace of completing graft cases

Chief Justice Martha Koome has listed one of her accomplishments, as she marks one year in being office, as being fruitful efforts to remove the bottlenecks involved in handling graft cases.

"When I took office, I said the Judiciary will not be the parking lot for corruption cases and indeed all the other cases. I was genuinely concerned about the amount of time these cases take... it is my responsibility to ensure there is efficiency in everything we do...," she said.

Koome spoke on Spice FM on Friday as she marked one year in office after taking over from her predecessor, David Maraga.

"There are some other fundamental matters we had at the anti-corruption court in terms of the way the cases were presented. If you present the case with 90 witnesses and half a tonne of documents, it will require a miracle to happen, especially during the Covid-19 period and 20 or more accused persons... each is coming with two or three lawyers.... the logistics of starting the case becomes nightmarish..." she said.

Koome said conversations were being had with Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to find a way to handle corruption cases.

"There has been tremendous movement of the cases like selecting critical witnesses... instead of 90, bring 10. The DPP is exploring other mechanisms like paying back the money.... at the end of the day, money was stolen from Kenyans, pay it back," she said.
