National Hospital (KNH) Othaya Annex has been renamed the Mwai Kibaki Hospital
as a tribute to the late president who passed away last week.
Renovations
at the hospital, which was initially launched in 2019 as Othaya Level VI
hospital before changing to KNH Othaya Annex, are currently ongoing ahead of
Kibaki’s funeral at his family home in Othaya on Saturday.
Following
the death of Kibaki, a number of politicians such as Bungoma Senator Moses
Wetangula and his nominated counterpart Beth Mugo earlier this week urged the
government to name a number of key infrastructure projects after the former
Head-of-State.
“There
are many places that should be named after him. I think we should present a
motion before the house to do so,” Wetangula told the Senate on Monday as members
of the House paid tribute to Kibaki.
It
is well documented that Kibaki refused to name a number of key state projects
that he commissioned after himself, despite politicians serving under him
persuading him to do so.
The
move to rename the hospital after Kibaki will mirror the government’s decision
to name a key hospital in the city after his late wife Lucy Kibaki, who passed
away in 2016.
