The families of the two victims of alleged police brutality, who are still coming to terms with their loss, remain hopeful that justice will be served.
Njiru, 22, and Mutura, 19, were allegedly killed by police officers after being arrested on August 1, 2021 at the Kianjokoma shopping centre by officers from the Manyatta Police Station.
They had allegedly defied the 10 pm to 4 am curfew that had been imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19.
A search for the missing brothers ended in grief on Tuesday, August 3, when the boys’ bodies were found at the Embu Level 5 Hospital morgue.
The deceased’s family says they learnt that the boys’ bodies were found at Kibungu shopping centre, 10 kilometres from where they were arrested on Sunday night.
Speaking at Monday’s memorial service, Felix Kamunyoti, an uncle to the two brothers said that they are hopeful the ongoing case will see his nephews’ killers be brought to book.
Human rights group Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) which was also represented at the service called for a speedy trial in the case, exuding confidence in the prosecution.
“The family and us are still hoping that justice will be served and we have joined them to push forth the call for justice,” IMLU Executive Director Peter Kiama said.
“We have lawyers who are following up the case and we are sure that the evidence we have as well as the pathologists’ reports will make a strong case and that eventually the whole police force sees major reforms,” he added.
Six police officers have since been arraigned over the murders.
The six; Benson Mbuthia, Consolota Kariuki, Nicholas Cheruiyot, Martin Wanyama, Lilian Cherono and James Mwaniki were were charged with two counts of murder and pleaded not guilty before justice Daniel Ogembo.
The case is set to continue on September 21 and 23 when various witnesses, including expert witnesses, are lined up to testify.
