The legislator noted that insults meted out at President Ruto are unwelcome in Kitui East constituency, urging political leaders to exercise restraint when undertaking political campaigns.
"We will not allow anyone to abuse William Ruto in Kitui East. Those looking for votes to contest against William Ruto should do so without insulting him," he said during a Madaraka Day celebration on June 1.
"For those who would want to, we can allow you. You have the freedom of speech, but we will not assure you of your freedom after speech."
This came a day after a woman was interrupted during a burial event, where MP Mbai was in attendance, after announcing her support for Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
"I have no fear saying that Kalonzo Musyoka will win in the 2027 General Election...," she said as four men walked towards her seeking to snatch the microphone.
The event turned chaotic residents clashed, forcing police officers to intervene.
His statement comes amid rising public upheaval on the alleged attempt by the government to violate Article 33 of the Constitution, which recognizes the right to freedom of expression.
