Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road cut off due to floods, KeNHA warns

In a notice dated March 19, 2026, the authority said the affected section is at Kedong Ranch near Suswa, where heavy rains caused flooding that disrupted traffic flow.

KeNHA stated that teams are currently on the ground working to reopen the road and restore normal movement.

Motorists were cautioned against attempting to drive through flooded sections, with the authority warning that doing so could lead to vehicles being swept away or stuck in silt.

Drivers were also urged to strictly follow directions from police officers and traffic marshals deployed in the area.

The agency further noted that continued heavy rainfall poses additional risks, particularly along the stretch between Naivasha Inland Container Depot and Suswa Ranch.

Drivers who have not yet begun their journeys were advised to delay travel until the floodwaters recede. 

For those with unavoidable travel plans, KeNHA recommended alternative routes, including Ngong–Suswa, Nairobi–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Narok–Narok, and Nairobi–Naivasha–Longonot–Suswa.

"KeNHA assures all road users that it is working around the clock to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists," the notice read in part. 

The notice comes as the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of heavy rainfall across the country throughout the weekend. 

Counties to be affected include Turkana, Samburu, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi and Meru.

Others are Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Garissa, as well as parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera and Tana River.

Kenya Met cautioned residents in these areas to remain vigilant, warning of possible floods, flash floods and poor visibility.
