Detectives in Kasarani are detaining a man after a horrific incident where he killed his five-year-old niece in a shocking act of violence.

The shocking incident, which unfolded in full view of neighbours and residents of Jacaranda Estate on the evening of June 12, saw the alleged intoxicated uncle throw his niece off the balcony, and later bang her head on the ground until she was unconscious.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the man, who appeared drunk at the time, arrived at the apartment at around 6:00 p.m. and caused a commotion inside.

The house help on sensing danger, grabbed the child, identified as Amanda Mutheu, and ran towards the door, screaming for help.

However, the man caught up, overpowered her and snatched the child from her arms.

In a chilling sequence of events, he then headed to the balcony where he jumped from the second floor with Amanda still in his arms. Once on the ground, he continued to assault her by banging her head on the floor until neighbours and security guards intervened and rescued the child from him.

Kasarani Police Commander Emmanuel Rono confirmed the details, saying: “After the jump, the suspect was beaten by the members of the public and subjected to mob injustice.”

Police officers from Kiamumbi Police Station responded swiftly and rescued the uncle from the mob.

He was booked at the station before being taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

Meanwhile, the severely injured Amanda was rushed to the same hospital’s ICU but was pronounced dead minutes later.

Commander Rono has since assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that justice will be served.
