Lorries and trucks exceeding 10 tonnes will not be allowed to access Mombasa's Northern Mainland Roads during peak hours until December 7, this year.

In a gazette notice dated Thursday, August 8, 2024, Mombasa County issued the directive barring heavy commercial vehicles from accessing the roads between 6.00 a.m. to 9.30 am and from 3.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

The roads include The Nyali Bridge, Fidel Odinga Road, Links Road, New Malindi Road and Old Malindi Road.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 26 (1) (c) of the Mombasa County Roads Act, 2016, the CECM, Transport and Infrastructure, Mombasa County, gazettes the temporary restriction of the usage of the Northern Mainland Roads, Mombasa County by heavy commercial vehicles above ten (10) tons from the 9th August 2024 to 6th December 2024," stated Transport CECM, Daniel Manyala.

"Movement of heavy commercial vehicles above ten (10) tons shall be restricted within the following roads during peak hours for the specified period and times. (a) The Nyali Bridge (b) Fidel Odinga Road (c) Links Road (d) New Malindi Road (e) Old Malindi Road."

The Transport boss said the order will take effect starting Friday, August 9 to December 6 this year.

The order comes even as the transport sector is considered a major source of income especially from the commercial vehicles due to the Port effect of the Coastal town.
