A 36-year-old man was rounded up and lynched by an angry mob in Gaturo village, Murang'a county on Saturday, November 25, after he killed his mother over a plate of ugali.

Patrick Irungu beheaded his mother, Magdalene Wangechi, 68, when he came home and demanded to be served ugali.

Wangechi had cooked bananas, and it was at this point that neighbours heard a quarrel between the two. Irungu then picked a machete and instantly killed his mother.

Residents say Irungu is a known substance and drug abuser, and claim he was under the influence when he killed his mother.

Angry residents who rushed to the house when they heard Wangechi screaming found her lying in a pool of blood.

Irungu, who was in the compound sneaked before the residents could get hold of him, but they gave chase and rounded him up in a thicket nearby.

They descended on him and lynched him.

Murang'a South Deputy County Commission Gitonga Murungi confirmed the incident, warning the public against taking the law into their hands.

Murungi said the bodies of the deceased were moved to Murang'a County Funeral Home. He added that they are yet to recover the machete the assailant used.
