Motorists
will soon be able to use M-Pesa to pay their Nairobi Expressway toll charges.
Moja Expressway Company CEO Steve Zhao made the announcement on
Thursday during the company’s annual general meeting, saying the new payment option will be rolled out in January 2023.
As it stands, motorists have three payment
options; the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card, the Electronic Toll Collection
(ETC) service, as well as cash payment.
The MTC
card can be loaded with toll points used to pay toll fees at toll stations on
the expressway while ETC allows toll points to be electronically deducted
through the pre-installed On-Board Unit (OBU) device, offering a non-stop road
service.
The
latest follows the introduction of erected speed guns along the highway
to tame over-speeding. The speed limit on the expressway is 80 km/h.
Moja Expressway on December 21
announced that the speed guns have been installed along various points of the
highway and will be operated by traffic police.
In June, former government
Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna attributed the series
of tragic accidents which were being witnessed at the Mlolongo toll station
to ignorance of the installed speed limits.
"Highway crashes on our roads,
including the expressway have been on the rise. The crashes are attributed
largely to drivers ignoring speed limits," wrote Oguna on Twitter.
"Motorists using the Expressway are urged to adhere to the
recommended speed limits to avoid chances of a crash like the Mlolongo
one," he added at the time.
