Anti-terror police have re-arrested Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) youth leader in Kiambu County, Peter Kinyanjui alias Kawanjiru, outside Ruiru courts shortly after being freed on bond.

Kawanjiru, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was initially arrested in connection with the torching of Kiambu Law Courts during the Gen-Z led demonstrations on June 25, 2025.

Kawanjiru's family attempted to prevent the officers from rearresting the politician but their efforts were thwarted as the police carted him off to a nearby vehicle.

Beatrice Wanjiru, the politician's mother, wailed as she pleaded with the officers to release her son, a plea that fell on deaf ears.

At the same time, the officers fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd, causing panic among the people who scattered in different directions.

Following the June 25th protests, Kawanjiru was among two politicians arrested in connection with the chaos during the demonstrations. Wanjiku Thiga, another DCP Party youth leader was also taken into custody at Kamakis in Ruiru.

According to Kawanjiru's family, the officers forcefully gained entry into the house and fired several rounds to scare away neighbours who attempted to deter their mission.

“Watu wa Limuru na watu wa huku wote walikuwa wamekataa waingie, na walikuja na risasi, na to make the matter worse, wakifyatua risasi wanaokota kila kitu [...] alibebwa na serikali juu wote walikuwa hapo, wenye wako na uniform na wenye hawana, mpaka walikuwa wamevaa hadi mask," Kawanjiru's mother said.

“...walisema hayuko Limuru, ati yuko Kiambu, sasa ndiyo tunangoja tuende Kiambu tujue kama yuko huko. Hofu yangu ni... hofu yangu ni wasimfanye vibaya...” His wife Catherine Wambui added.

Experts have termed the duo's arrests as the State's attempt to tame those with dissenting voices.
