Police officers on Sunday lobbed teargas at the Kyandula shopping center in order to disperse a crowd that demanded action after a nine-year-old child was hit and killed by a speeding car.

The angry residents barricaded the Kibwezi-Kitui road on Sunday, as they awaited police officers from Mutomo to collect the body of the minor.

Photos from the incident showed residents blockading the road with stones, tree stumps, and twigs at the Kyandula shopping center.

Ikutha sub-county deputy commissioner Vincent Loctary confirmed the incident, saying the road had been finally opened, and the body of the minor moved to the Mutomo Sub County Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the motorist involved in the Sunday accident is in police custody, awaiting his arraignment on Monday.
