Detectives probing the death of 12-year-old Patience Mumbe have recovered CCTV footage believed to show her final movements last Thursday evening in Nairobi’s Pipeline Estate.

Her body was discovered two days later in KAA Estate, Embakasi—approximately 15 kilometres from where she was last seen—prompting widespread concern and calls for swift justice.

According to investigators, officers on Monday visited the family’s home to question relatives and neighbours who last interacted with the Grade 7 pupil before her disappearance.

The discovery of the CCTV clips, taken from several shops in Pipeline, is expected to help piece together the timeline leading up to her death.

Footage viewed by detectives shows the girl leaving her home at around 6:30 p.m. and moving quickly through the neighbourhood. At one point, she appears to look behind her before heading toward the Taj Mall bus stage. This is the last confirmed sighting of her in Pipeline.

Her body was found on Saturday morning by children playing nearby, according to residents of KAA Estate. The incident has left the community shaken.

“Children were playing when they noticed the body and alerted us,” said Henry Kibet, a resident of Embakasi. “We immediately informed authorities. It was a very distressing scene, and people here are deeply worried about safety.”

Parents in the area have expressed growing fear over the security of school-going children, citing poorly lit streets and a rise in disappearances.

“We want justice for that girl,” said Jane Wanjiku, another resident. “As parents, we are scared. This area has no lights and security is wanting—our children use this route daily.”

In Pipeline, where Mumbe lived, residents echoed similar concerns.
“We’ve witnessed several cases of children going missing,” said Pauline Bosibori. “One of mine went missing recently, though thankfully we found them. It’s frightening.”

Gideon Kioko, also from Pipeline, urged authorities to intensify investigations and protect minors.
“This issue needs serious attention. Anyone involved in harming children must be held accountable,” he said.

Embakasi Police have confirmed receiving at least four reports of missing children in the past month. Detectives continued their investigations on Monday with a visit to the family home to collect additional evidence.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday as police work to establish the cause of death and identify those responsible.
