Political rivals Ruto, Raila meet at Matiba home

Deputy President William Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday visited Kenneth Matiba’s family to pay their respects.

The two political rivals led a host of government officials and legislators to offer their condolences to Matiba’s widow.

“I want to commit to you that those of us in our generation will work overtime to ensure that our politics is de-ethnicised,” the Deputy President said.

He was responding to a plea by veteran politician Charles Rubia that the two main political parties put an end to tribal politics. Mr. Rubia, who was also at the home, urged leaders to put aside their differences.

Ukabila ni kitu kibaya. Jubilee, NASA mpigane na huo ugonjwa ambao unanitia wasiwasi na mimi sina miaka mingi imebaki lakini I must say this before I die you got to fight it (Ethnicity is a bad thing. Jubilee, NASA I urge you to put an end to this vice that is worrying me as I don’t have much time left on this earth but I must say this before I die you got to fight it),” he said.

On his part, Mr. Odinga said the late Matiba was a great Kenyan as he transited from once century to the next. He reiterated that Matiba’s life was that of selfless service to the country.

Kenneth Matiba died on April 15 after a long illness. His wife Edith revealed that he had been admitted to hospital for 29 weeks before his death.

A church service in honor of the late Matiba is to be held at his Riara Ridge residence in Limuru this Sunday for family and friends while planning meetings will run from Thursday, April 19.

The funeral service will follow on Wednesday, April 25 at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Nairobi. A day later, another service will be held at the Uhure Stadium in his home county of Murang’a.
