A section of the busy Embu-Meru highway was closed on Tuesday morning after cracks emerged on Ikong'u bridge at Kiagima area in Embu West sub-county.

The soil in one part of the busy bridge started caving in, leaving a crack that prompted the closure of the road and traffic redirected.

Embu County Police Commander Nicholas Maina urged motorists plying the route to adhere to directions by traffic police for alternative routes.

Those heading to Nairobi from Meru have been advised to divert at Kivwe Market through Muthatari and back to the highway in Embu town, while those headed to Meru are to divert at Mutunduri through Manyatta, Kianjokoma, and back to the highway in Runyenjes.

This comes amid heavy rains being experienced in most parts of the country.

The rains have led to devastation, leaving behind a trail of destruction and loss of lives. The latest is the Mai Mahiu tragedy where 71 people have been confirmed dead and 28 others missing, after floods hit the area in the wee hours of Monday night.

In Murang'a, six people were killed when landslides hit the Mathioya area. Several others were injured.

So far, a total of 169 lives have been lost due to the floods, with 102 people injured across the affected regions.

At least 30,099 households have been displaced, affecting approximately 150,495 people. In Sindo, Homa Bay County, 161 households were displaced by the flash floods after following a heavy downpour in the area.

Overall, 190,942 individuals have been affected by the flooding in the country.
