Fishermen from Bondo, Siaya County are now appealing for government support to enable them to boost their income levels.

Led by Uyawi Beach Management Unit (BMU) Secretary Steve Oburu, the fishermen decried the high rate at which Lake Victoria is being depleted of fish stock and called on the county government to find a way of supporting them.

He stated that due to reduced fish stock in the lake, fishermen are suffering and unable to make profits because they often return without any catch.

Mr Oburu suggested that the county government support them through the provision of grants or fish cages to enable them to get into aquaculture instead of solely relying on conventional fishing methods.

The secretary stated that the fishermen can be supported through their existing groups, saying that cages can be given through the BMUs.

He equally called for the intervention of their local leaders to help them push for such support so that they can be able to boost their income levels.
