Sifuna: I am not interested in a Cabinet position

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna says he is not interested in a Cabinet position under President William Ruto’s government.

The outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party senator has been critical of Ruto’s “broad-based government” forged last year after the President allied with long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga, head of the ODM, which saw several Odinga allies appointed to the government.

In a Thursday panel discussion on Citizen TV’s Daybreak program, Sifuna’s Kisumu counterpart and fellow ODM member Tom Ojienda suggested that the Nairobi senator was interested in the Gender Cabinet Secretary post recently filled by Hanna Cheptumo.

“I understand why he says that; it’s because I am loved by the ladies, which is not something we can say about him,” Sifuna retorted.

“I have no interest in serving in a government like the one in power. I would never take a Cabinet position. I am not Makau Mutua or any of those people,” the senator added, referring to Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign secretariat spokesperson, whom Ruto appointed as his constitutional affairs advisor this week.

Sifuna said he won’t be vying for any other post in the 2027 general election.

“I am happy serving the people of Nairobi as senator, and even in 2027, I will not seek any other office than the Nairobi senatorial position,” he said.

Sifuna has been lashing out at ODM party members for supporting Ruto, alongside other vocal members of his party, such as Siaya Governor James Orengo.

They accuse them of being tone-deaf and failing to hold the President accountable over Kenyans’ needs.

In response, some of Ruto’s allies have branded them saboteurs of the “broad-based government” agreement.
