Stray elephants kill woman in Makueni
A middle-aged
woman was on Wednesday evening killed by six stray elephants in Kathonzweni, Makueni
County.
According to
neighbors, the woman was attacked by the jumbos while fetching firewood at Kwa
Kasoa forest in Mbuvo Nzau.
As of
Thursday morning Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers who responded to the
residents' call late in the night were still evicting the animals, which
residents say had been destroying their property since Wednesday morning.
Kathonzweni
ward MCA Benedict Maneno has ciricised KWS for taking long to respond, accusing
them of taking action after a life had been already lost.
"These
elephants are destroying our farms, KWS have taken too long to respond, until they
killed a mother, KWS responded at 10 PM since morning," MCA Maneno noted.
In the meantime, residents have been cautioned against the jumbos which are still at large and roaming in the area.
