President William Ruto’s apology to Gen Zs at the National Prayer
Breakfast on Wednesday continues to elicit mixed reactions from Kenyans and
leaders alike.
Opposition leaders who gathered at Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s
Tseikuru residence in Kitui County on Thursday called out the Head of State
over the apology, which they view as a mockery of tens of families whose
children bore the brunt of the use of excessive police force during the June
2024 protests.
"Gen Z mko hapa mnakubali apology ya Bwana Ruto? Gen Z walikufa,
hawakufa? You have blood on your hands, Bwana Ruto. He gave a conditional
apology. Do you accept it or not?" DAP-K Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa posed
to the crowd.
Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi on his part said;
“Ati kama tulikosea natoa msamaha, iko msamaha hapo? William Ruto, take your
apology to Sugoi…because you’re going to be one term."
Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala added: "Apology ni
kuomba tu msamaha, kusema tu ‘nisamehe.’ Lakini repentance ni lazima useme ni
makosa gani unataka kusamehewa."
This, coupled with other challenges that have reduced the ruling Kenya
Kwanza administration’s popularity with the citizenry, the opposition says, has
laid the ground for a resounding defeat in the 2027 general election.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the opposition already has
a concrete plan in place to send President Ruto packing in 2027.
"Ndio Kenya iendelee, Ruto must—go! That is the most important
thing. Na yeye anashinda akitupigia kelele ati hatuna agenda. Tuko na agenda.
Na agenda ni kufukuza yeye kwanza,” Gachagua noted.
Kalonzo added: "You swore to uphold the Constitution, I must remind
you. And some of the things you’re doing with your fellow administrators in
this failed administration are clearly anti-constitution and are impeachable
offences."
The opposition leaders say the President’s number is up and that his
goose is already cooked.
"I’m not just a politician, I’m a political scientist. Mimi
nakaanga mahali ya hesabu, mahali kuna formula. This matter is done — only that
it’s too far away. Aki hii uchaguzi ingekuwa ni kesho?" Gachagua
exclaimed.
