The government of Tanzania is aimed at bolstering its diplomatic and economic relations with the United States.

With the renewed focus on economic diplomacy, the President Samia Suluhu administration seeks to strengthen international alliances and propel Tanzania onto the global stage.

Speaking during the 249th US Independence Day celebration in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, emphasized the government’s appreciation for the robust US–Tanzania partnership.

He noted that US investments in Tanzania, totaling over $80 billion, have significantly boosted key sectors—most notably health, which has seen transformative impacts on millions of lives.

In April 2025, the United States government imposed a 10 percent reciprocal tariff on Tanzania, a rate similar to that imposed on other East African nations.

Ambassador Kombo commended the cooperation between the two nations; a relationship that dates back to the era of President John F. Kennedy and Tanzania’s founding father Julius Nyerere.

In recent days, Tanzania has modernized its foreign policy with a focus on trade, investment, and mutual respect. Under Suluhu’s leadership, the government launched a revised foreign policy that aligns diplomatic engagement with national development priorities, placing economic growth at the center of international relations.

According to Kombo, Tanzania readies to engage on the global stage as an equal partner. He says Tanzania sees the US emphasis on trade over aid as a constructive challenge, urging Tanzania to grow through innovation, transparency, and disciplined policy.
