Nakuru: Three women arrested in fake car selling syndicate
Three women are currently being held by
police in Nakuru County in connection to a motor vehicle selling ring allegedly
headquartered in Mombasa which is minting millions from innocent Kenyans.
Lucy Ayasi,
Fatuma Musa and Sakina Abass were arrested following a dragnet led by Nakuru
police in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
after one of the syndicate’s victims alerted authorities.
Police
believe that Ayasi is the brains behind the criminal entity which
unscrupulously sells motor vehicles with outstanding loans to unsuspecting Kenyans.
In the
aforementioned case for instance, Ayasi, in her alleged capacity as a vehicle broker,
purportedly sold a Ksh.1.3 million Subaru Forester to the complainant who
swiftly made the payment via a bank transaction to an account registered under
Ayasi’s name.
The victim,
who is employed at a local geothermal plant, would however rue the decision
sometime later after the vehicle was repossessed by an auctioneer on grounds
that he had failed to pay for the car in full.
The car was
purportedly sourced from a dealership in Mombasa where Musa and Abbas are said
to be employed.
Abbas allegedly approved all payments made to
the company’s system while Musa was in charge of logbook allocation at the said
dealership.
“We
started investigations after the victim reported the case. After enquiring, the
auctioneer told us the company has a logbook and also that the victim has a
logbook,” Rift Valley
DCI boss Mwenda Meme said in a statement.
“From there I dispatched my team to Mombasa
and we realized that many Kenyans are losing millions from the fraudsters.”
Meme added that Ayasi used different identification documents when she approached her potential victims with the promise of selling them high-end vehicles.
