Kisumu Starlets fueled their campaign for the Women Premier League trophy beating Thika Queens 1-0 in a tightly contested match at the Thika Stadium Saturday.

A lone goal in the 56th minute from prolific Mercy Airo made the difference as Kisumu Starlets rallied to get maximum points against Thika Queens.

Sawe Nelly would have given the hosts an opener from 20 yards out just a few minutes into the game when she was put through by Mwalima Jereko from the right flank but Starlets goalie was cautious not to inflict harm to her team this early into the game, thwarting the danger.

The starlets had their first chance after a run-of-play on the right flank but Mercy Airo blasted wide.

The away side was at it again, this time from the left flank when Mercy Airo was put through on goal from the midfield but her shot missed the goal post a few inches.

The Queens would have changed the narrative just before the breather when Akoth Salome put through Mwalima Jereko with a well played header just outside the box but the latter couldn’t capitalize to set the pace for the second half.

The away side netted the opener and the only goal eleven minutes into the game when Airo initiated a move down the central midfield before squeezing a long shot past the Queens back line and goalie who had charged forward to save the situation but she was way too late.

The dust had not settled and the Starlets were at it again with a dangerous build up, prolific Airo being at the centre of it all with an elevated shot placed purposely to beat the Queens’ goalie who had charged forward to confront the oncoming attack.
