Butali, Strathmore crowned 2022 KHU champions

Jaw-dropping perfomance from goalkeeper Joshua Omondi saw Kenya Police end the unbeaten run for league champions Butali Warriors with a 1-0 victory, as the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) 2022 season came to a close at City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.

The win saw the law enforcers join Butali for the Africa Club Championship (ACC) that will be held in Nairobi mid-next month.

Omondi cancelled the four-time champions striker Constant Wakhura’s  flick in the last quarter that would have resulted to shairing of spoils.

Forward Sammy Oungo penalty shot on the 44th minute was enough for Police to frustrate the millers.

Both sides clutched their defence for the first two quarters but a slight slowdown from the sugar millers costed them a goal following Titus Kimtai's unfair tackle.

Police needed the victory in this last match of the season to overtake Western Jaguars on the second position on log for a direct ticket on the continental club bonanza.

The results saw Police wrap-up the league second with 40 points, two ahead of Jaguars and three behind Butali.

Earlier at the same venue, Maurine Ogoche and Rachel Khamala goals were enough for women champions Strathmore University commonly known as Scorpions, to brag over unbeaten season as they skunk Dutch Flower Group Wolverines 2-0.

They are joined by Blazers who finished second to the continental event next month.

At the closing ceremony of the league, top three teams were awarded trophies and medals.

Festus Onyango and Grace Bwire of Butali and Scorpions were awarded for the male and female Premier league top scorer, for netting 15 and eight goals respectively.
