Defending champions St Anthony, Dr Aggrey and Kaya Tiwi sail to semis in national school games

Defending champions St. Anthony Kitale from Rift Valley sailed to the semi-finals in hockey, as Dr Aggrey and Kaya Tiwi from Coast reached the last four in basketball, at the ongoing National Secondary Schools Term One Games in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

St. Anthony topped Pool A of the boys’ hockey at Hill School, after defeating Maseno 5-0 in their final match today. They qualified undefeated with 9 points, having beaten Meru School 2-0 in their first game on Tuesday, before seeing off Nairobi School 3-1 in their second match on Wednesday.

St. Anthony Kitale Head Coach Kevin Lugalia said, “It has not been an easy pool, despite winning all our matches. It was a tough pool, and we expect the same in the semi-finals tomorrow. We are confident of clinching the title, but we are taking one game at a time.”

Meru School finished second in Pool A, after seeing off Nairobi School 3-2 in a shoot-out, after they both finished with the same points and goal difference.

In Pool B, Musingu topped the group with 7 points, followed by Mang’u High School with 4 points, despite losing to Musingu 3-0 in their final pool match today.

In the girl’s category, Nyamira Girls topped Pool A, after defeating Hillcrest 3-1, followed by St. Josephs who drew 0-0 with St. Charles Lwanga.

“We are confident of winning the title this year. Last year we lost at the finals to Tachassis, but this time, being the only team from last year’s nationals who are back this year, we will emerge victorious,” said Dennis Kigai, Head Coach, Nyamira Girls High School.

In the semis tomorrow, St. Anthony will face Mang’u High School, while Musingu will take on Meru School in the boy’s category. Nyamira will face AIC Nyayo as Tigoi plays St.Josephs in the girls’ category.

In basketball, Dagoretti topped Pool A in the boys’ category, after winning all their matches, including defeating Lukenya 60-52, with Lukenya finishing second in the pool.

In Pool B, Laiser Hill is leading the log after seeing off Onjiko 83-65 in their last pool match, followed by defending champions Dr Aggrey who thrashed Wajir High 149-27.  

In the girls’ category, Butere is leading the pack in Pool A, followed by defending champions Kaya Tiwi, while Loreto Girls tops in Pool B followed by Our Lady of Mercy.

In the semi-finals played on Thursday, Dagoretti will face Dr Aggrey, while Laiser will take on Lukenya in the boy’s category. In the girls’ matches, Butere will tackle Our Lady of Mercy, while Loreto Girls will face Kaya Tiwi.

The finals are set for Saturday.

In other news, Brookside Dairy say they have resumed sponsorship of the competition after it was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic for two years. They have invested over Shs.14.5 Million, alongside kitting all the players and providing refreshments to the players and match officials.

“We are now back bigger and better, and you can only hope for better things in the years to come, as the partnership is set to continue,” said Wilson Okong’o, Brookside Public Relations Officer.
