Harambee Starlets forward Mwannalima Dogo says the team is
using pre-tournament friendlies to assess their readiness for the 2026 Women’s
Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to be held in Morocco from March 17 to
April 3.
The Starlets on Monday evening fell 2-0 to Benin in Ivory
Coast, and are set to face the Elephants in their second build-up match on
Wednesday at 10 PM. Despite the defeat, Dogo remains optimistic about the
team’s progress.
“The benefits of these friendlies are for preparation and to
identify areas where mistakes happen, so that in the next training sessions
with the coaches, we can rectify them before WAFCON.”
Kenya has been drawn into a competitive Group ‘A’ alongside
hosts Morocco, Senegal, and Algeria. With strong opponents awaiting, the
Starlets are determined to use the friendlies to address weaknesses, sharpen
teamwork, and build confidence ahead of their opening match.
The technical bench is expected to closely monitor defensive
coordination, transitions, and attacking fluidity, while also offering
opportunities to emerging talents who could play a key role at WAFCON.
With the tournament just weeks away, the Starlets are keen
on translating lessons from these international fixtures into a stronger, more
cohesive squad. By correcting mistakes early and fine-tuning their approach,
Kenya aims to make a meaningful impact in Morocco and compete strongly against
Africa’s best.
