Esther Kinya, a rare jewel from Nthare Secondary School

Esther Kinya, an orphaned student from Meru County, has won the hearts of many locals after a stellar performance in the hammer throw secured her a prestigious gold medal in the just concluded National Secondary School games.

The exhilarating exploits by the Nthare Secondary School final year student has earned her new status in the county with many seeing her as the newest rising star from the area.

However according to her coach Josephat  Mwenda, Esther’s journey to the top has not been rosy  given her poor background and the demise of her mother that left her father helpless with little ability to see her through her studies.

“Esther has overcome many challenges in her life and it is her time to shine. Nothing can stop her, “said the coach.

Mwenda revealed that her teachers took it upon themselves to carter for her school fees and nurture the rare talent, a gesture that has handsomely paid off, putting her school on the national radar and now hopes that Esther can unleash a similar masterstroke at the East Africa School games.

“The fete has made us proud as a school, especially in the Eastern region. I want to thank the school management for standing with her,” Mwenda said.

Nthare Secondary school has for the last 13 years dominated the hammer throw and Mwenda they are not ready to relinquish the status as they head into the East Africa phase.

“We feel she can face any opponent. However we are working hard to strengthen her weak areas ahead of the next assignment,” he charged.

Felista Kawira of Kianthumbi Secondary School earned silver medal in the same contest.

The Term One 2019 edition of the National Secondary School games was held in Mombasa County, from April 8-13.
