The inaugural Elijah Lidonde Memorial Cup will take place in
July at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, organisers AFC Leopards have
announced.
The tournament will bring together top FKF Premier League
clubs based and with links to Western Kenya among them Leopards, Vihiga
Bullets, Nzoia Sugar and Kakamega Homeboyz.
Leopards held a fund-raising for the event on Wednesday led
by the Director of immigration Alexander Muteshi where moneys collected will be
used to honour fallen Leopards legends such as Joe Kadenge, Jonathan Niva,
David Asibwa, Livingstone Madegwa, Anthony Mukabwa, Sammy Tabu, Haggai Mirikau
among others.
“The event will as well be used to promote peace and unity
among football lovers in the country,” Muteshi said.
Muteshi challenged Leopards' arch rivals Gor to also think
of organizing such event in Kisumu or Homa Bay counties to uplift grassroots
football.
Lidonde, who died in September 1987, was once the captain of
Leopards and the national team Harambee Stars between 1950 and 1961.
During the fund drive held in Nairobi, Sh1.4 million was
raised.
