The Kenya
Federation of American Football (KFAF) concluded it’s first-ever youth
development camp, marking a significant milestone in the growth of American
football in the country.
Held on July
18th and 20th at the University of Nairobi grounds, the camp brought together
over 100 children from different schools and communities to learn the basics of
flag football.
The event was
part of the broader USA-Kenya Youth American Football (KEBYA) Project, and was
led by veteran American coach Dr. Ray Baxter, who brings over 30 years of
coaching experience.
“This is our
inaugural youth development camp, and it has been a resounding success. Getting
a hundred kids to come out for this first camp is a big achievement,” said KFAF
President George Alwanga.
“The camp,
spearheaded by Dr. Ray Baxter, has been instrumental in teaching the
fundamentals of flag football. Just having him share his knowledge and skills
with our youth is a huge plus for us.”
Alwanga also
expressed optimism about the future of American football in Kenya, emphasizing
the federation’s commitment to hosting regular training camps and building a strong
youth development pathway.
“I’m especially
happy for the schools that came on board. Our goal is to continue this journey
beyond today, and eventually organize monthly camps. With time, we hope to have
these young talents competing locally and internationally,” he added.
The initiative
reflects KFAF’s growing efforts to popularize the sport across the country and
nurture the next generation of players through structured training, mentorship,
and international collaboration.
As the
federation continues to grow its footprint, the success of this inaugural camp
signals a promising future for American football in Kenya.
