Kenya's Para Powerlifting team for the visually impaired has collected nine medals on the first day of the World Championships in Almaty City, Kazakhstan.
The David Waore-led side clinched gold in the junior category after Kevin Mbugua emerged victorious.
The Thika Secondary School for the Blind Form Three student also added a bronze medal in the 67.5 Kg category for men.
"I have won medals for the first time and it is something which will motivate me more going forward and even my school mate in Thika who does not take sports as a career," said Mbugua after witnessing Kenya's anthem on the Kazakh's land.
Kenya collected one gold, five silver and three bronze medals targeting more in today's outing.
The ladies won four silver medals in various categories, with the men's team captain Morris Kinyua clinching bronze in the 82.5 Kgs category.
"We set a 20-medals target and we are already half way on day one, meaning we are on course to achieve our goal because the two remaining categories are where our strength is," noted the confident Kenya Sports Association for Visually Impaired chairman Charles Waithereo.
The teams will on Wednesday participate in the squat and dead lift categories after bench press which was held on day one.
