Kiambu based Kinale Girls clinched the 10th edition of the Western Black Rock 7s tournament with a 14-7 victory over rivals St. Joseph Girls school-Kitale 'Joga' in the girls’ final held on Sunday at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) grounds in Kakamega.
The two-day tournament attracted top secondary school rugby teams from the region, culminating in a hard-fought final that saw Kinale’s Kate Elizabeth steal the show with a brilliant brace that sealed the title.
Elizabeth crossed over the whitewash early in the game to hand Kinale a 7-0 lead, but their celebration were cut short as St Joseph equalized for a 7-7 tie at the break.
Despite a spirited second-half push by St. Joseph's, Kinale's disciplined defense held firm, Elizabeth staged an electric run to score a center post try that secured the win for Allan Bush led lights.
Speaking to Citizen Digital after the final, Kinale head coach Allan Bush expressed pride in his team’s performance and resilience throughout the tournament.
“This win means a lot to us. The girls have trained tirelessly, and to see that effort pay off is truly fulfilling. Kate was phenomenal today, but this was a team effort. We dedicate this win to our school and supporters,” said Bush.
Kinale had earlier outclassed Madira 36-0 in the semifinals, while St. Joseph had dispatched Mwira 35-14 to book their spot in the title clash.
In the boys' final, Senende narrowly edged out Kakamega High School 12-10 in a pulsating contest to win the boys category.
