Brazilian thrower Luiz Mauricio Da Silva lit up the Ulinzi Sports Complex with a massive personal best of 86.34m to claim gold in the men’s javelin at the 2025 Kip Keino Classic.
The 25-year-old, relatively unknown on the global stage,
upset a star-studded field that featured Olympic and world champions—signaling
his arrival in elite company. His winning mark sparked wild celebrations from
fans in Nairobi and sent a strong message to the athletics world.
Germany’s 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Röhler launched his
season with an impressive 80.79m to take silver, while Portugal’s Leandro Ramos
secured bronze with 80.68m.
Kenya’s Julius Yego, cheered on by a passionate home crowd,
threw a season-best 78.74m to finish fifth. The 2015 world champion, known for
learning the sport through YouTube, showed flashes of his old form as he eyes a
full return to top-level competition.
Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada placed
seventh with 77.49m, while Belgium’s Timothy Herman, the defending Kip Keino
Classic champion, had to settle for eighth (77.14m).
Kenya’s Alex Kiprotich also recorded his season-best,
throwing 74.17m for ninth place. India’s Kishore Jena (73.06m) and Greece’s
Ioannis Kyriazis (60.02m) completed the field
