Kiprop, Obiri dazzle in Kenyan sweep at 2025 Peachtree Road Race

Kenya's Hellen Obiri made a stunning debut at the 56th edition of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, clinching victory in the women's elite race with a time of 31:29.
The two-time Boston Marathon champion and Olympic silver
medalist stamped her authority on the challenging course and promised fans that
this is only the beginning.
Obiri, who holds a personal best of 30:15, faster than the
event’s 2019 record, showed patience and poise against a tough field that
included fellow Kenyan Cintia Chepngeno, the fastest entrant with a personal
best of 30:08.
“It was a challenging course, and we had many elite athletes.
So for me, it was about staying patient and working hard at the end,” she said.
In the men’s elite division, 24-year-old Patrick Kiprop
stormed to victory in just his third post-high school race, crossing the line
in 27:35 minutes.
The Arkansas Razorbacks standout outpaced heavy favorites
like Isaia Lasoi (world No. 3 Road racer), 2025 Istanbul half marathon winner
Alex Matata, who finished fifth, and Vincent Langat with the fastest personal
best of 26:55 minutes.
“I didn’t know what to expect. Coming down that finish line,
I was so happy to be the winner today.”
Both Kenyan stars highlighted the energy of the Atlanta
crowd and the race atmosphere as key to their performance, hinting at future
returns.
The 2025 editions saw the race begin under yellow alert
conditions due to forecasted heat and humidity, with the organizers urging
runners to hydrate and adjust their pace for safety.
