Kitondo School invited for National Schools 7s in London

Fast-rising Kitondo School rugby sevens team has been invited to take part in this year’s Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools 7s tournament in London following their fine run at last year’s inter-schools competitions.

The Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens is an English rugby union sevens tournament, organised by Rosslyn Park F.C, and this year’s competition is scheduled for March 18 to 22 in the English capital.

The Makueni County based school’s steady rise to the top echelons of School Games continued to uniquely unfold in last year where they defended their County and Eastern region rugby 7s titles.

They went ahead to finish fourth in both Nationals and East Africa levels where their upturn in form caught the attention of the Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools 7s tournament organisers.

The team is however fretting over the life-time trip due to financial set-back with the school’s games master Gabriel Musyoki urging potential sponsors to fund their sojourn in England.

“We’re currently training in Nairobi ahead of this prestigious tournament but we’re just doing it with hopes that we will get funding to grace the event.

“We are requesting our former players and students under our alumni program to also come on board as well as the county government. This team is based where Governor Mutula (Kilonzo Junior) comes from and so we hope to get his audience and present our case.”

Originally a tournament played amongst British public schools, it has evolved and expanded over the years and now accepts sides from all over the world attracting more than 9,500 players aged 13 – 19 from over 800 schools.

The tournament is also recognised as a breeding ground for top British international rugby players, many of whom first started out playing in the competition.

Musyoki added that if their dream to travel to London is fulfilled, the platform would act as a springboard for his players in their careers.

“There are the next Kenya’s stars and if we get this chance probably that would be their turning point as far as talent development is concerned.

“The championship would also be perfect in our preparations for this year’s school games where we want to reign supreme.’’
