Nairobi United head coach Nicholas Muyoti has urged his side to shift focus from a celebratory mood and focus on their match against Gor Mahia in the FKF Cup final on June 29.
The NaiBois, who eliminated Mara Sugar in the semis,
are heading to the final after being crowned the National Super League (NSL) champions
earning promotion to top flight football next season.
The winner of the final gets a ticket to represent
Kenya at the CAF Confederation alongside Kenya Police who punched the CAF Champions
League ticket after lifting maiden premier league title last season.
Muyoti says that his players are mentally ready for
the challenge ahead.
“We know the history of Gor Mahia. They are one of
the best teams in the country. But history won’t play the game. It will be 11
against 11 on the pitch.”
“The boys believe they will win. They’ve said it,
and they are ready to show it on the pitch.”
Muyoti admitted that his side was a bit relaxed in
their final league game that saw them lose to Naivas.
“It was a poor mentality. We were too comfortable
after securing promotion. That needs to change, and the players understand that
we need to win this match.”
Muyoti’s opposite number Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno
praised Nairobi United’s journey to the final, urging his players not to
underestimate the debutants.
“Underdogs do surprise favorites. Nairobi United
deserves a pat on the back. They’ve eliminated Tusker, Kakamega Homeboyz, and
Mara.”
“They’ve earned their place in this final, we won’t
treat them as underdogs, but as equals. We are both in the final and anything
can happen.”
Gor Mahia, who eliminated Murang’a Seal in the semis, are keen to end the season on a high and deliver a trophy to their fans after relinquishing the league title.
