Veteran Kenyan sprinters Grace Kidake and Nancy Ngina are brimming with confidence as they set their sights on more glory at the upcoming Africa Masters Athletics Championships, slated for September in Tunisia.

Kidake, a former national 400m champion, delivered a stellar performance at the recently concluded European Speed Masters Championships in Shkoder, Albania. The 40-year-old sprinter bagged two gold medals, one in the women’s 200m (W40) category and another in a split relay.

This builds on her previous international success, having clinched a silver and a bronze in the mixed relay events at the 25th World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, last year.

“The competition in Albania was tough, but we’re grateful to have returned with medals. This event helped us assess our preparedness ahead of the African Championships and next year’s World Masters in Daegu, South Korea,” said Kidake. “It was also critical in improving our qualifying times and overall performance. I truly appreciate Athletics Kenya Masters and the leadership of Athletics Kenya for making this trip possible.”

For Nancy Ngina, the competition in Albania marked her debut on the international Masters Athletics stage and she didn’t disappoint, securing two bronze medals - in the women’s 200m (W59) and another in the split relay.

“I’m deeply thankful to everyone who made it possible for us to travel and compete in Albania,” said an elated Ngina. “It was my first time racing outside the country, and it was a wonderful experience. Masters athletics is a great way for retired athletes to stay fit and healthy. I encourage more former athletes to get back on track or on the road and rediscover the joy of competition.”

The European Speed Masters Championships took place from May 15 to 18, attracting veteran athletes from across the globe.
