Sports and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has on Monday confirmed that the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, is now ready to host the upcoming 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for August.

Mvurya made the announcement today after officially receiving the key to the facility from the contractor on site, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s preparations to co-host the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The stadium had been closed for renovations since last year.

The handover signals that Kasarani is now fully equipped to meet international standards ahead of the high-profile continental tournament.

Mvurya revealed that he will immediately pass on the stadium keys to the CHAN Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to commence operational planning and logistics ahead of the continental assignment.

“Today we receive the key to this stadium and hand it over to the Local Organizing Committee as a sign that the stadium is now complete and is ready for CHAN,” said Mvurya.

He also updated the public on the progress of other critical training facilities, citing Ulinzi Sports Complex as a near-complete example which has hosted diverse Kenya Premier League and FKF Cup matches.

Turning his attention to Nyayo Stadium, Mvurya stated that the only pending work is the completion of the perimeter wall due to the new recommendations given by CAF during their inspection earlier this month.

He issued a two-day ultimatum to the contractor to finish the task at Nyayo Stadium, assuring Kenyans that the venue would be ready on time.

“What is pending at Nyayo is the construction of the Perimeter wall as per the new recommendations given by CAF to improve the security but in-field the situation is okay and this would take about two days to be complete.”

With infrastructure almost in place, the Cabinet Secretary announced the next key priority is preparing the national team.

“I think the next phase starting tomorrow should be starting to build up and support the federation for adequate and intensive preparation of our national team," a confident Mvurya averred.

At the same time, Mvurya issued a strong appeal to the public to take care of the refurbished and newly constructed facilities. He warned against acts of vandalism, stressing that damage to the infrastructure would lead to costly repairs and budgetary setbacks.

“When we are doing these sports infrastructure we are using public funds and it would be unfortunate to find someone vandalizing them, meaning we will have to re-budget for renovations. We can’t make progress, when we have a facility like these it is our responsibility as Kenyans to take care of it,” he stated.

It is now a race against time for the contractors to buckle up their efforts and fast track their efforts to finalise on the critical utilities required ahead of CHAN with stakeholders still remaining optimistic East Africa will deliver a successful tournament that will act as a dresser for AFCON 2027.
