The much-anticipated second edition of the Scrummage Katch 7s is set for this weekend at Kakamega School, with 26 schools confirming participation in what promises to be an exciting showcase of rugby talent from the Western and Nyanza regions.

Among the standout teams are the girls’ defending champions, St Joseph Girls School – Kitale, who will be looking to retain their title against an increasingly competitive field.

Vihiga High School, winners of the inaugural tournament, will also be in action as they aim to defend their crown in the boys’ category in what is expected to be a fiercely contested event.

Assistant Tournament Director Shirley Anindo expressed confidence in the success of the tournament, emphasising its role in grassroots talent development.

“We’re excited to host the second edition of the Scrummage Katch 7s. The enthusiasm from schools has been overwhelming, and we’re looking forward to another thrilling weekend of rugby. With 26 teams participating, the growth of this tournament highlights the strong demand for structured competitions in the region,” Anindo told Citizen Digital.

Scheduled for May 17 and 18, the Scrummage Katch 7s continues to establish itself as a key platform for school rugby, giving young athletes a chance to showcase their skills and gain valuable exposure.

The tournament is a collaborative effort aimed at strengthening school rugby in Western Kenya while promoting values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship among the youth.

It also serves as a curtain-raiser for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games, which begin next week. Kakamega County will host both the national and East African games later in August.

Fixtures and pool draws are expected to be released ahead of the weekend as teams finalise their preparations.
