In an unusual turn of events, National Super League team Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) walked off the pitch during a scheduled league match against Nzoia at Sudi Stadium on Sunday, citing insufficient medical facilities.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, MOFA head coach Alfred Chole expressed serious safety concerns in the abandoned fixture in Bungoma.
According to Chole, MOFA players decided to leave the pitch after noticing that the ambulance provided by Nzoia lacked the essential safety equipment needed to handle potential injuries.
"The ambulance lacked crucial equipment necessary for treating injuries on the pitch," Chole explained.
He added that his team waited for a second ambulance to arrive but never did. This led to their abandoning the match, prioritizing player safety over competition.
However, Nzoia Sugar FC head coach Charles Odero disputed these claims, asserting that the second ambulance arrived on time.
Odero voiced his disappointment with MOFA's walk-off, urging the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to consider all details before making a decision.
"We ensured the second ambulance arrived promptly. It’s now up to FKF to judge fairly based on the facts," Odero stated.
Both teams have submitted reports to FKF, which is expected to make a ruling on the incident in the coming days.
The dispute has fueled a broader discussion about medical preparedness and safety protocols at league matches, with many fans and players calling for stricter standards across all levels of Kenyan football.
As the football community awaits FKF’s verdict, the incident has raised important questions about the quality and consistency of healthcare support in sports venues nationwide.
