Kiambu county government has finally erected a wall around Gachororo Health Centre, the biggest public hospital in Juja.
Two months ago, Wananchi Reporting highlighted the wanting condition of the Level 3 hospital.
With no fence to protect it, grazing animals and members of the public often accessed the facility, ‘endangering’ lives of workers and patients.
Workers said there were security concerns after gunmen raided a private hospital in Nairobi in early April and robbed patients and staff.
Juja ward MCA Jeremiah Kiama raised the issue of insecurity at the county assembly.
“Lack of a fence has resulted in unauthorised entry of strangers risking the security of patients, staff, and property,” Kiama said.
Staff welcomed the development, saying the county should also tackle the drainage menace in the hospital before embarking on an upgrade.
“When it rains, flood water makes the sewer to overflow and ends up creating a swamp here,” a worker said.
Out of 12 constituencies in Kiambu, only Juja lacks a Level 4 hospital, but plans are underway to upgrade Gachororo hospital to that status.
