A lorry suspected to be ferrying stolen cows was torched by residents along Murang'a - Sagana road near Kabuta shopping centre on Saturday morning.

Two suspects were lynched by the mob while the driver and another suspect escaped.

This comes amid rising cases of cattle theft during the festive season as culprits sell off the meat at lower prices to merrymakers.

Last week, residents of Ngiriambu village in Gichugu sub-county, Kirinyaga County decried increasing cases of livestock theft in the region.

In one incident, 43 members of a self-help group were left high and dry after a cow they bought to feast on during Christmas was stolen.

Leads pointed them towards Kianyaga-Kiamutugu road , where they found what they believed to be the remains of their slaughtered cow.

Speaking to Wananchi Reporting on Wednesday, Comba Thitha, the secretary of the self-help group, said, “We have been saving Ksh. 200 every month to buy the cow and we bought it at Ksh. 50,000 for our families to celebrate the new year but the cow has been stolen.”
