Villagers flog chang’aa seller they accused of spoiling their husbands

A woman accused of selling chang'aa was on Saturday rushed to hospital after she was beaten by locals during an illicit brew crackdown in Narok South.

According to witnesses, over 500 locals, comprising men and women, armed with sticks, combed through Olpukoti village, in Melelo location of Narok South, hunting down illicit brew sellers in their homes and brewing dens.

The said woman is said to have refused to corporate with the villages. The woman is said to have enjoyed administrative connection and protection from authorities in the area.

“Alcohol has ruined lives of young men in our village. Only a few weeks ago we buried a young man because of illicit brew,” said Kimogoro village elder Richard Kiswaa.

The locals destroyed paraphernalia and other equipment used in the business of illicit brew.

Meanwhile, illicit brewers and their subordinates were made to sign documents indicating that they had ‘willingly’ quit the illicit business for the good of the community.

The locals have called on the County Commissioner to take action against administrators who are sleeping on the job, allowing the illicit trade to thrive under their watch.

Meanwhile, the National Government through County Commissioner (Nacada) has launched targeted campaigns aimed at curbing alcohol, drug and substance abuse in the areas.
