Two artisanal miners died on Friday morning after the wall of the mining shaft collapsed at a mining site in Kasembo village, Suna East sub-county, Migori County.

Suna-Nyabisawa location Chief Mr.Benard Aliwa confirmed the incident, saying the miners were prospecting for gold last night when the shaft collapsed.

Aliwa said one of the miners died inside the mine, while the other died while he was being rushed to the hospital.

The area chief said they suspect that the miners died because of suffocation. He said the two bodies have been moved to the mortuary pending investigations.

Meanwhile, the miners have been urged to be cautious when they are prospecting for gold during this rainy season.

The retired area Assistant Chief, Barack Oganja, said there is a need to improve the safety of the miners in all the mining areas to avoid such accidents.
