9-year-old genius Laurent Simons drops out of university

Laurent Simons, the 9-year-old who made world news headlines over his electrical engineering degree studies has dropped out of school.

His parents had told CNN in November that they were expecting him to graduate from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) in the Netherlands before the end of the year.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, a dispute between the university and the Simons family forced Laurent to terminate his studies.

University officials told CNN that they had recommended that Simons finishes his course mid next year instead.

According to them, there were exams that he was yet to sit for but his father still remained adamant that the son should graduate in December.

The university further maintained that the boy’s engineering course should last for at least 3 years but the father wanted him to complete it within 10 months.

Interestingly, the older Simons refuted the claims instead revealing that he had apparently received an offer to study for a doctorate at a university in the United States.

“Sometimes you have to make choices,” Alexander told CNN, adding: “If he lets it go, you never know if he will get that opportunity again.”

The family did not reveal a fixed a start date for the said American university neither did they disclose the name of the institution but only said the boy will study for a PhD in electrical engineering.
