Interior
CS Fred Matiang'í has declared Friday, April 29, 2022, a public holiday following
the death of retired president Mwai Kibaki on Friday.
In
a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Saturday, Matiang'í in his
capacity as the chair of Kibaki’s National
Funeral Steering Committee revealed that the late president’s state funeral,
with full military honours and protocols, will be held on the said day at Nyayo
National Stadium.
The
late president will however be laid to rest at his family home in Othaya, Nyeri
County on Saturday, April 30, after a public prayer session at Othaya Stadium.
According
to the CS, the late president’s body will lie at Parliament grounds from April
25 to 27, where President Kenyatta will lead the nation in the public viewing
of the former Head-of-State’s body.
“President
Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Mrs. Margaret Kenyatta, will lead the nation in
publicly viewing the body of at 10.00 a.m. on Monday, the 25th April, 2022,” said
CS Matiang’i.
“All
other dignitaries and Government officials are required to have arrived at the
National Assembly for the event on or before 9.00 a.m. Thereafter, the public
will be allowed to view the body and to pay their last respects.”
Dignitaries
wishing to pay their respects to Kibaki’s kin will be accorded time on April 26
and 27 at the deceased’s official office in Nyari Estate from between 9 am and
12 noon.
“The
Head of the Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and
Coordination of the National Government will launch the official signing of the
Condolence Book of the late President on Tuesday, 26th April 2022 at Harambee
House at 9 am,” the Interior CS added.
“Condolence
Books will be availed at all Regional, County and Sub-County Government Offices
for the members of the public.”
