Exactly one year and two months after the shocking murder of two brothers, Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura, in the Kianjokoma area of Embu county, their parents remain hopeful that justice will be served.

On Monday, John Ndwiga and Catherine Gichuki appeared in court in Nairobi to testify about their final moments with their sons before their untimely death on August 3, 2021.

The parents told the court about their last phone calls with their sons, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Monday.

The parents claimed that the couple, who ran a pork business, called them several times on August 1, 2021 and agreed to close early due to the imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew.

"They remained in contact but their phones went off later that night," wrote ODPP on twitter.

It wasn't until the next morning that they became concerned and began looking for their sons at Kianjokoma market, where they learned that some people had been arrested by police officers the night before for violating curfew regulations.

Three days later, when the search seemed to yield nothing, they reported the matter to Runyenjes police station where they received the heartbreaking news that their sons had passed on.

Their bodies were discovered at the Embu Level 5 Hospital morgue on August 3 and buried on August 13.

The bodies of the boys were discovered at Kibungu shopping centre, 10 kilometers from where they were arrested, according to the deceased's family.

Police have since maintained that the duo died as a result of jumping out of a moving vehicle.

Six police officers have since been charged in connection with the murders.

The six; Benson Mbuthia, Consolota Kariuki, Nicholas Cheruiyot, Martin Wanyama, Lilian Cherono and James Mwaniki were were charged with two counts of murder and pleaded not guilty.

According to the ODPP, 6 witnesses have been presented in the trial so far, with 12 more scheduled to testify.
