Organisers are expecting more than 3,000 athletes to compete at the 33rd edition of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championships set for Sunday at the Eldoret Sports Club, Uasin Gishu County.

Race director David Letting said the preparations for the event are complete with a few tweaks in the course which will make the races more competitive.

“Last year we had about 2,600 participants and this year we expect that number to increase since this is a very busy year in athletics and cross country races are very important for athletes’ preparations.” Letting said.

With a major focus in unearthing talent, Letting said the event largely attracts young athletes who will battle it out in the age group races including 500m, 1km and 2km.

Other races are; 6km under-20 women, 8km under-20 men, 8km senior women and 10km senior men.

Letting disclosed winners in the senior races will walk away with Sh25,000 with top 20 athletes set to be rewarded.

The seasoned coach further disclosed that the event will provide perfect build up for athletes ahead of major cross country events this season including; Africa Cross Country Championships to be held February 25 in Tunis, Tunisia and the World Cross Country Championships slated for March 30 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Similarly, Kenya is also poised to host the World Schools Cross Country in May at the Ngong Race Course.

“This race has a very rich history with many athletes having risen to the top after competing here and it our target to maintain it for many years just like the Boston Marathon”

Letting said registration will start at 6am on Sunday morning.

Weldon Langat (30:31.2) and Emmaculate Anyango (27:49.4) emerged victorious in last year’s event.
