Head coach Japheth Munala says preparations have hit top gear ahead of their Saturday clash against Nairobi Prisons and the African Club Championship, scheduled for April 7-25, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.
“We’ve had intense training sessions and so far so good; we are in good shape. I don’t have any fitness issues in the squad apart from Mwende who injured her knee this week,” Munala told Citizen Digital.
Munala is confident the defending champions will secure a win against the prison wardresses as he looks to test the form of his fringe players.
“We are going for a win because we want to qualify for the semis. We have a big squad and therefore it will be a good opportunity to test the fitness levels of both the first team and fringe players.”
The former Malkia Strikers tactician says they have worked on their back-court defence and reception, which have been their Achilles' heel, and are in good shape for both competitions.
“We have been working on our back-court and net defence and all I can say is if we can display the game like we did against DCI then we are on the right track,” Munala said.
Ahead of the African Club Championships, Munala added, “We are ready to compete at the highest level. We will keep working on finer details to be at our top level.”
The Bankers will be missing captain Edith Wisa who is away on maternity leave, while Magdaline Mwende will remain sidelined for the rest of the season after sustaining an anterior Cruciate Ligament injury earlier this week.
With both middle blockers who were vital in last season’s campaign gone, Munala will have to rely on Belinda Barasa, Elizabeth Sokoiyo, Pauline Chemtai and Sharon Serem, alongside Mildred Cherop who joined prior to the season after a professional stint in Dubai.
