World mourns death of marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum

Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana died Sunday night after being involved in a tragic road accident in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County whose impact could be seen in the heavily damaged vehicle they were travelling in.

The athlete died at the age of 24 when his athletics career was on an upward trajectory, having recently smashed the men’s marathon world record with an astonishing run of 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon in October. He became the first man to complete the 42km race in under two hours and one minute.

Following the news of his demise, the athletics fraternity, sporting community and leaders alike took to social media to mourn the departed hero.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

On behalf of all World Athletics we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation.

It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon World Record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time.

An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe posted on his X account.

 “I am shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana.  My condolences to the families, friends,athletic fraternity and Kenya at large. This is a huge loss” world 800m record holder David Rudisha wrote on X.

“Rest in Peace Kelvin Kiptum. Gone too soon but you will never be forgotten. Legend” world cross country champion Beatrice Chebet wrote on facebook.

Apart from athletes, leaders from across the political divide also mourned the departed hero.

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach. His remarkable talent and unwavering dedication to athletics inspired countless individuals.

He made an indelible mark not only through his achievements but also through mentorship and leadership, guiding aspiring athletes to reach their full potential. The legacy he leaves behind is a testament to passion and commitment to excellence.

During this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends and teammates. May you find comfort in the cherished memories you shared and strength in the support of one another.” Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi wrote on X.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga also paid tribute to Kiptum.

“Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight.

My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity. Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero.” Odinga wrote on X.
